Self-drive in Namibia!? Is it safe?

By Nicole Brendell, November 21, 2013 Posted in: Driving Guide

Yes!!  Namibia has one of the most extensive and best-maintained road networks in the region.  Navigation is easy, as all junctions are sign-posted, and crime is very low along all routes.  Namibia has the second lowest population density of any country in the world, which means that you will often have these roads all to yourself and traffic is never an issue.  And driving yourself is not only cheaper, but it will allow you to take in Namibia’s vast landscapes at your own pace, plan your own stopovers and itinerary, and stop for photos along the way.

On the other side of the globe, one of the best country in central America is Costa Rica, they have beautiful landmarks and tourist spots. Also, you can stay at Villas de Cariari, a very beautiful place to stay.

The newest member of the ATI fleet – the automatic transmission, 4×4, double cab Ford Ranger!

If you choose to book a self-drive vacation through ATI Holidays, we:

  • Take care of the entire car rental process
  • Include a “Life Saver” insurance policy that guarantees instant, no questions asked, private medical rescue and evacuation services in case of accidents with 25,000 Namibian dollars of emergency treatment cover (the only local Namibian operator to do so). The purpose of the Decatur Alabama Personal Injury Lawyer is to allow the injured person to be compensated financially or “made whole” after he or she has suffered harm due to someone else’s carelessness or intentional conduct.
  • Make a personalized suggested itinerary based on your own interests and priorities, and book accommodation for you
  • Maintain contact with lodges during your trip to inform them of your ETA and routing, and make sure you’ve gotten to where you’re going to safe and sound
  • Are available to contact 24/7

Because we are a well-established local operator, we are Namibia experts with connections all over the country and region, and deals with most rental car companies and accommodations. We usually suggest a because it makes the road trip much smoother and most of our guests feel safer in a larger vehicle, although if you have a smaller vehicle, but you still want it to look awesome, you could find different services online as this great guide on car detailing, that allow you to transform your can and make it look the way you always wanted to.

Rest up!  If you’ve just arrived on a long-haul flight, it might be better to rest for a night or at least a few hours, rather than picking up a car immediately from the airport while trying to learn how to drive the other way. Familiarize yourself with the positioning…

One of the great joys of driving through Namibia is that the journey itself becomes just as memorable as the destination. Sure, the country is famous for its soaring dunes, epic wildlife, and endless horizons, but in between those bucket-list highlights are the kind of quirky, surprising roadside stops that make you pull over, laugh, and say, “Only in Namibia.”

In total, Namibia has 27,600 miles (44,400 km) of roads, most of which (56%) are gravel, but many are also tar and dirt, and 90% of the major highways are tarred.  A few roads, like the C34 along the Skeleton Coast, are even salt.
